Brad Ziegler finished the year with a 3.26 ERA, but that number doesn’t tell an honest truth. Ziegler struggled, taking a bullpen-high seven losses on the year, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio was downright mediocre: he struck out only 41 batters in 60 2/3 innings, while walking 28 batters. Putting that many batters on base with a free pass is a big problem for a reliever.
Having Rodriguez didn’t make up for not having Derek Jeter or Mark Teixeira. In fact, Vernon Wells was the only Yankee swinging a hot bat with a three-hit night, although his teammates had six combined themselves. But with Pettitte giving up seven runs, no amount of offense would have been enough.
This ties in with arm strength, but could take longer to get back than his velocity. If Peavy’s arm is tiring after three or four innings going at full speed ahead (which, let’s be honest, is the only speed for him), then obviously he’ll need some time after the season starts to regain that stamina. If i had to guess, stamina would be the main reason why Peavy won’t be in the White Sox’s starting rotation in April-it’ll be the reason why he won’t be 100 percent until, say, early May.
I suppose Quentin may actually be a slightly better choice at No. 3, but all things considered, Rios is fine for the three hole. The book says a team’s No. 3 hitter should actually be filled by its fifth-best hitter, and Rios is right in that range. Mainly, it’s good Konerko’s production won’t be wasted on hitting third-he’s much better suited to hit fifth behind Dunn.
The Tribe, which last won fewer than 70 games in back-to-back seasons in 1927-28, got single runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the White Sox edge to 5-3. In the fifth,Carlin hit his secondhome run and in the sixth, Crowe drove in Travis Hafner, who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Given that many elements that were supposed to headline the “ALL IN” concept thave failed, the Sox have been on par with the rest of the league. So i picked the most average grade for a team thats done only half as good as their capable of.
My research came up with interesting managerial facts. In 2006, sale jerseys manager Ozzie Gillen sent a young pitcher back to the minor leagues because he failed to properly retaliate after the Texas Ranger pitcher had twice hit Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
Lefty Craig Breslow turned in an admirable season in the bullpen, posting five saves in Bailey’s absence. He also notched 16 holds with a 3.01 ERA on the year — while striking out 71 batters in 74 2/3 innings, too.
